The USA Powerlifting North Carolina State Championship was held this past weekend in Apex, NC. Several of our lifters made the journey to help disrupt the power balance in the Tar Heel state.
Chelsea Smart, making her first first appearance in a USA Powerlifting event, was very
impressive on the platform. Finishing second in the 72 kg open division with a total of 761 lbs., she broke 4 total records with her 193 pound benchpress! In addition to breaking the RAW bench record as well as the single lift bench record, she did the same thing to the equipped records! One has been on the books since 1999, the other was set in 1989!
Brittany Wolford was equally as impressive with her deadlift. She completed her day by going 7 for 9 and besting a very deep 63 kg class. Like Chelsea with the benchpress, Brittany broke both the RAW and equipped records with her 375 pound pull! Fantastic job!
Michael Price continues to get better with age. Mike, moving into the M2a age group, benched a very strong 474 pounds and nearly pushed 480 pounds. He is proving that age is only a number and you can continue to improve as we get a little older.
Todd Talford, although not having the day he was hoping for in the full power competition, destroyed the field in the single lift benchpress competition. Weighing in at only 183 pounds (83 kg), he continued to impress and demand the attention of the crowd by benching an incredible 424 pounds. His efforts were good enough for the Best Lifter Award for the bench.
Congratulations is in order for all of our other lifters who came out to compete! Keene Steele traveled from Charleston along with several lifters from his Crossfit Wappoo gym and we continue to see a strong showing out of the Lancaster area. Mike Effner also performed well, driving up from Moncks Corner. Everyone performed very well with several medals going to our SC lifters. Carolina Strong!
