June has been an excellent month for lifters in South Carolina! The USA Powerlifting Summer Showdown was held in Georgia earlier this month followed by the IPF Classic Powerlifting World Championships held this past week in Kileen, Texas.
In Georgia, Lauren Rutan continues to shine as she transitions from accomplished Olympic weightlifter to powerhouse powerlifter. Lauren finished first in her weight class and broke both equipped and RAW squat records with an amazing lift of 331 lbs. Also making the trip to Georgia, Jeff Bigham made an impressive splash into the world of the Masters classification. In his first meet as a M1a, Jeff broke the masters and open records with a squat of 568 lbs, and destroyed the existing master records in the bench and total! Great job guys!
This past weekend, the best powerlifters in the world converged on Texas. Amongst those, South Carolina had several lifters represented who helped the United States finish first in all but one team event. Donald Bigham had an incredible day, going 8 for 9 in route to winning 4 gold medals and breaking a World Record in the squat (585 lbs. at 181 lbs. BWT)! On a smaller scale, Donny also broke the M1a and Open SC State records in the benchpress as well as the RAW and equipped total!
Regina Hackney continues to defy the aging process by winning another World Championship! Competing in the Masters 4 division, Regina broke her SC State record in the benchpress.
Keith McHoney was an absolute beast in an incredibly competitive open class. Keith, finishing second in the world, broke both the RAW and equipped state deadlift records with an awesome lift of 600 pounds! While only weighing in at 143 pounds, Keith squatted 518 lbs., benched 330 pounds and with his dead, tied his standing record total of 1450 lbs!
You guys are so impressive, and it is an absolute privilege to have you lifting in our State! Great job!
